Video: C2E2 Interview

A quick post of a great video put together by Dave West of Comic Book University. This was taken at C2E2 in Chicago just after I had finished the Alex Ross chalk mural. That was 23 hours of hard work, so forgive the fact that I look kind of tired in this. But other than my appearance Dave did a FANTASTIC job, and must be a wizard when it comes to editing because I don’t sound like the complete moron I usually do. Thanks again Dave.

July Fest 3D Anamorphic Chalk Art

Illustrator Eric Maruscak makes a 3D anamorphic chalk art mural at the 2010 July Festival in Binghamton, NY. This was a sidewalk art tribute to Cartoonist Johnny Hart who created the comic strip B.C.

I am constantly being confused with artist Julian Beever. If you’ve received one of those very popular forwarded e-mails full of amazing 3D chalk drawings, he is the one mostly responsible for the images. Kurt Wenner is the second most famous 3D artist and some of his work often gets mixed in there and credited to Mr. Beever, but rest assured these are two different and exceptionally skilled artists. Being confused with these incredible masters is certainly flattering, but over time it can border on the precipice of becoming slightly annoying when people constantly think you are someone else.

Splish Splash Reading Bash Anamorphic Chalk Drawing

Illustrator Eric Maruscak makes a 3D anamorphic chalk art mural at the 2010 George F Johnson Splish Splash Reading Bash event.

The George F. Johnson Library has asked me to do a number of chalk art sidewalk drawing classes over the years, and recently wanted me to come to a Summer Reading event called the Splish Splash Reading Bash to create some artwork for the kids. I decided to use this as another chance to practice a 3D anamorphic chalk drawing as immediately an image of a cartoon fish came to mind, so I sketched up a quick concept of a hole in the sidewalk filled with water, and a lounging fish with his favorite book on the ground beside him.

Library Chalk Art Class 2010 – 3D Hole

Illustrator Eric Maruscak makes a 3D anamorphic chalk art mural at the 2010 George F Johnson Library street art class.

So just last week I completed my most recent session in a series of summer sidewalk chalk art classes at the George F. Johnson Library. Once again, as always seems to happen, we had a number of beautiful sunny days followed by rain and thunderstorms predicted on the day of my class. Fortunately we decided to ignore the forecast and go for it anyway, and wouldn’t you know it the rain held off all day (besides for two specific drops that hit my arm) and the class was a success!

Library Chalk Art Class 2008 – The Incredible Hulk

Illustrator Eric Maruscak makes a chalk art mural at the 2008 George F Johnson Library street art class. Artwork of The Incredible Hulk from Marvel Comics, original art by Ed McGuinness.

My last post was on my 2007 library chalk art summer class, so here are some images from the 2008 session. For this year the class was moved to a shadier spot behind the library where the sidewalk was divided into nice even squares along the back drive. Once again I used comic book art as the subject matter for my demonstration mural, this time it was an Ed McGuinness illustration of The Incredible Hulk. I completed about 90% of the image before the students arrived, then worked with them on their chalk drawing technique over the next three hours.

Library Chalk Art Class 2007 – Robin from Teen Titans

Illustrator Eric Maruscak makes a chalk art mural at the 2007 George F Johnson Library street art class. Artwork of Robin from DC Comics Teen Titans, original art by Scottie Young.

For several years I have been teaching the art of street painting to children and young teens at summer classes for the George F. Johnson Library in Upstate New York. If they are working from an existing photograph or drawing, I show them how to grid their reference image and match it to a larger grid on the pavement in order to keep proportions consistent. I demonstrate the proper use of color, from applying the lightest chalk tones first to the darkest colors as they complete the piece, always putting black down last. We work on blending the chalk, the use of lighting to create form and shadows, and special techniques to deal with the rough sidewalk surface.

Video: C2E2 Chalk Mural, complete Time Lapse

As most of you know I was at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo this past weekend, otherwise known as C2E2. I can’t say enough good things about the show or the people at Reed Exhibitions who run it.

C2E2 Mural sketch in Time Lapse

My second time lapse video blog. The sketch for the C2E2 chalk mural. A recreation of the official convention poster by Alex Ross. I also provide an answer to one of my more frequently asked questions at conventions. Enjoy, and as always let me know what you think.

Video: Big Apple Con 2009 Interview

OK, what the heck, one more video to post… why not. This time it was my last appearance of 2009 at the Big Apple Con, where I recreated a Joe Quesada and Jim Lee combo illustration of Spiderman and Batman into a 9 foot wide by 13 foot tall chalk mural.

Video: New York Anime 2009 Interview

Hey everyone. I missed posting this after it was put up on youtube.com so I thought I would put it in a blog for all to see and enjoy. When I was making the Soul Eater Chalk Art for FUNimation at the New York Anime Festival, I was interviewed by the Japan Society about my artwork. It was a nice break as I had been working non-stop since early in the morning. We talked for about 10 minutes regarding all things artsy, and I think it turned out pretty good.

Spider-Man and Batman Chalk Art Mural at Big Apple Con 2009

Illustrator Eric Maruscak makes a giant chalk art mural at the 2009 Big Apple Con in New York City. He recreated a Joe Quesada Spider-Man and Jim Lee Batman from a Wizard 2003 publication jam cover.

This past weekend was the Big Apple Con in New York City, and I was in attendance creating another giant chalk art mural for the show. This time I was asked to recreate the cover of a Wizard Publication from 2003. The cover art was by both Joe Quesada and Jim Lee, and since these were the co-guests-of-honor at the convention it made perfect sense, so I set to work trying to do justice to the incredible art of these well known illustrators.

Big Apple Con 2009 Chalk Art Mural Appearance

Illustrator and Chalk Artist Eric Maruscak will be appearing at the Big Apple Comic Con on October 16th, 17th and 18th creating another one of his famous convention comic book chalk art murals.

Hey everyone. If you haven’t heard, I am on the guest list and will be appearing at the Big Apple Con this October 16th through the 18th. What will I be drawing this time around? I don’t know yet, but I expect final art to come this week. I see that some of the guests of honor include Jim Lee and Joe Quesada, as well as Joe, Andy and Adam Kubert and even William Shatner, so I guess the sky is the limit when it comes to possibilities.

VIDEO: NY Anime Soul Eater Chalk Art unveiled at the FUNimation Offices

FUNimation hangs the 2009 New York Anime Festival Soul Eater Chalk Art Mural in their offices after successfully shipping it. Chalk art by illustrator Eric Maruscak.

OK, this its TOTALLY cool. As I mentioned in my last post I recently appeared at the New York Anime Festival and created a 9 foot wide by 13 foot tall chalk art mural based on the Anime Soul Eater. The piece took 30 hours to make, and everyone seemed pleased with the end result. At the end of the show we were even able to stand the mural for a few hours so that everyone could get great pictures of it. You can see the photos of the progress and finished chalk art in my New York Anime 2009 Soul Eater Chalk Art Mural post here.

The Soul Eater Chalk Art Mural at the 2009 New York Anime Festival. Mural by Illustrator Eric Maruscak. Soul Eater distributed by FUNimation.

Hey everyone… I’ll be attending the New York Anime Festival this weekend, and over the course of the entire show I’ll be on the floor of the Javitz Center in Manhattan creating a giant chalk mural of art from the Anime Soul Eater. I am being brought by FUNimation, and will actually be set up right near their booth in the front of the hall.
