Joe Madureira Chalk Art Wolverine

I have been a huge fan of Joe Madureira’s work for a long time now. Unfortunately, I stopped collecting comics on a monthly basis a few years before he first appeared on the scene penciling Uncanny X-Men for Marvel Comics. Later, as I followed the comic scene through outside sources like Wizard Magazine, I started seeing his work pop up from time to time, especially when his Battle Chasers series hit through Wildstorm Comics Cliffhanger imprint in the late 90’s.

Now, Joe Mad (as many people call him) has moved more in to the concept art arena, creating imagery for various studios and being a creative director on the video game Darksiders which should be released some time this year. But he also made a high profile return to comics penciling The Ultimates Volume 3 for Marvel which I STILL have to pick up.

The guys work floors me, and though some are critical of his style, I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who makes flat out cooler images. I’ve been hoping I’d get the chance to recreate one of his images as a mural at a comic convention appearance, but the opportunity has yet to happen. So instead, I took a drawing he made of Wolverine and recreated it for an art walk in my home town. I only had about 3 hours to make the piece, but the crowd response was great and I think it turned out pretty good!

So Joe, if you are out there, and want a mural piece for publicity at some convention soon, drop me an e-mail, okay? And everyone enjoy the images below.

I have always enjoyed chalk drawings on asphalt. I think this is really nice. I especially like the way the skin tones are captured on the arms. The total effect of the piece is really nice. Good work!
