Chalk Art as
Event Marketing

I have been an artist my entire life. For most of that time, I have focused on small scale cartoons and pencil drawings. However, over the past 10 years I have been working in a different medium, and it has been my most successful art venture to date.

Today, I am mostly known for my giant chalk murals which I create as live performance art for conventions and art festivals. I have been making these marketing artworks since 2004, and have drawn close to 100 pieces. Each chalk mural can take an average of 25-30 hours to complete, and are usually around 9 feet wide by 12-13 feet tall.

I have been fortunate to make these for major clients across the United States, and at some of the biggest pop culture conventions in the industry. Click below to see my complete chalk art gallery.

Cartoon / Illustration

From a very young age, I have loved cartoons and comic books. I was fortunate enough to grow up during a peak age of newspaper funny pages, and during the mid-80’s comic book boom, while also being of the right generation to get my fill of Saturday morning cartoons and hand-animated Disney movies when they were first released into theaters.

For many years, my goal was to become a syndicated newspaper cartoonist, and try to live up to the greats of my childhood such as The Far Side, Bloom County, and Calvin and Hobbes.

Obviously, times change, everything moved to the internet, and I have moved with them. I have created webcomics, and done illustrations for online content. The chalk art may be my calling card, but cartooning is coming up a very close second, and will someday become my primary focus, I am certain.

Time Lapse Videos

After a few years of making giant chalk murals, I wanted to find a way that they could be experienced by more people. They are most impressive in person, but even at shows with 100,000+ attendees, I found it was still a limited audience.

In 2010, I invested in some camera equipment, taught myself some video editing techniques, and began recording time lapse videos of my mural creations. I would condense 30 hours of work down to 5 minutes of video. Even the shortest of attention spans could enjoy them.

These videos became added value for my chalk art clients. After a show, I could provide them with excellent social media content that could be shared everywhere. Brand the video with the customer message, logos, and pertinent information, and I had another tool to increase the marketing value of my chalk art work. The videos are all housed on my YouTube channel, but can be embedded anywhere.

Time Lapse Videos

After making giant chalk art for a while, I wanted to make my murals available for more people to see. Conventions, while great, were a limited audience. I invested in camera equipment, taught myself video editing, and started making time lapse videos, condensing 30 hours of work down to about 5 minutes. The videos are great for social media, can be branded with sponsor identity and information, and are a great tool to increase the marketing value of my appearances. They are fun to watch too.

“I had the chance to work with Eric last summer when Crayola hosted an outdoor Chalk-A-Palooza event at the HQ’s of one of our customers. Eric was accommodating, friendly and easy to work with! He managed his art installation around break/lunch times to allow for associates to visually see the transformation unfold. On top of all that, Eric delivered a masterpiece of interactive (3D) Art that became the focal point (and talking point) of the day!”
